Ants in the house are the scourge of many folk in summer leaving many people to hate the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they know the summer will herald
Only the unluck people who have suffered it will know the true effects of flying ants in their own homes.
Having an infestation of basic wingless ants is bad enough but when they enter their yearly mating phase the position can become intolerable.
Ants regularly form colonies in the sub-floor areas and in the wall cavities of our dwellings and these colonies will survive for many years if left untreated and become progressively more annoying each year.
Our houses are warm and dry and provide the perfect places for a thriving ant colony; even solid concrete floor is not a hindrance to ants.
Our house heating systems raises their metabolism even in the colder months when they are not active outdoors and my earliest ant call-out was on my birthday, which falls in January!
Ants need a sandy soil and there are plenty areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which have more ant infestations than most others, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as regular ant locations.
Unfortunately it is when they are in their mating phase that they are most annoying. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this usually is pretty regularly around the middle of July.
Ants mate in flight and around mid-summer the colony releases flying immature Queens and flying males which in nature would fly off and mate in the air. Many thousands of these flying ants are produced per colony and nests tend to time their production in order to mate with ants from nearby colonies.
Often this process starts after a few of days of hot, dry weather and will usually continue for about a week or so although smaller releases will extend throughout most of June, July & August.
Unfortunately when the nest is under the floor of the house the effects can be devastating, literally thousands of flying are produced into the lower rooms, collecting on windows as they go towards the light.
This can be extremely upsetting for some people leading to severe emotional upset to the degree that people learn to hate the summertime and have actually sold their homes to escape the plague of ants which they know will appear each summer.
The poor summers of the last three years have meant that ant call-outs were down on earlier but ants seem to have a way of catching up and 2010 could possibly be a particularly good year for them.
Many people who have this problem try for DIY solutions with products from hardware stores etc but mostly these efforts are doomed to failure as they are not getting to the heart of the infestation which is the nest itself, securely hidding safely in the cavity wall or sub-floor area.
Luckily for many people the answer.
At Harrier Pest Control and Prevention (subject to satisfactory site) we are able to solve this problem and issue an extendable 3 year guarantee.
The process which is carried out mainly from the exterior of the dwelling, is perfectly safe for animals and children and leaves no smell, involves drilling little holes into the cavity walls of the property, not unlike a damp-proof course injection and blowing an insecticidal powder into the cavity wall under pressure.
This forms an impenetrable barrier over which the ants cannot go and together with a precautionary spray of the inside (if deemed necessary) will slowly bring the infestation under control.
The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter remain open so it is an easy matter of topping up the wall cavities every 3 to extend the effectiveness of the guarantee in 3 year periods.
This procedure is best done out in the early spring however it can be done all year round.
As a strictly limited time offer in our quiet period we are offering 25 percent off the normalstandard cost until May 30 2010. Whilst we normally cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are able to venture further afield but this will be at extra cost.
